Anisomeles indica: Silver nanoparticles synthesis and anticancer property
There are several novel strategies applied for the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles. Here, the investigation was carried out on Anisomeles indica, a medicinal plant which has not been tested for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles so far; hence, our present report enlightens upon the biogenesis of silver nanoparticles from the leaves of A. indica, their characterisation and anticancer activity in MCF-7 cell line. The dried leaf extract was used for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles, and characterisation of the same was carried out through Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The UV-Visible spectroscopy resulted in a peak in the wavelength ranging 420 nm to 490 nm as an indication of the presence of silver nanoparticles. The XRD analysis proved silver nanoparticles to be crystalline and having face-centered cubic geometry. In SEM and TEM, the nanoparticles were shown in the range of 20-30 nm and 50-100 nm. The FTIR spectroscopic analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups within the reaction medium which were responsible for the reduction of silver ions. Further, the DNA fragmentation was found to be by apoptosis. In A. indica, especially the ovatodiolide compound found in a higher composition had the potency to show high cytotoxicity effects by causing apoptosis with reactive oxygen species generation and down-regulation of FLICE inhibitory protein. Hence, this work proved the efficacy of A. indica as a biomaterial towards the biogenesis of silver nanoparticles and its use as an anticancer agent.
